Exposure Keratopathy (EK) refers to an eye surface disorder in which absence of an adequate tear film results in disruption of the corneal epithelium. Medications used for anesthesia, such as sedatives and neuromuscular blocking agents may cause an incomplete eyelid closure during anesthetic sleep and consequently an inadequate distribution of the tear film. This may produce a corneal ulcer, infection, and even corneal perforation in severe cases.
he patients in intensive care units (ICU) and critical care settings have an increased risk of developing EK. Care should be taken during general anesthesia surgeries and ICU staying.
